Lidocaine is fast becoming obsolete as a first line medication for the Ventricular Fibrillation Algorithm. The American Heart Association has advocated for the utilization of the anti-arrhythmic medication known as Amiodarone. While many EMS services are using the new medication, there are many others who are sticking with the dosage of lidocaine.
Do not let the statistics sway your decision to utilize the V-Fib protocol to the fullest extinct. However, you should be aware of the status of your patient as well. You must use defibrillation in addition to Lidocaine to help decrease the fibrillation threshold. Lidocaine has been at the forefront for many years and Lidocaine will continue to be my selection.
